The Gospel of John (Discussion I)

Please read Chapters 1-11 of John's gospel, concentrating on the first four chapters. Cite one thing John includes that *isn't* in the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke).

What do you think is John's purpose in including the "extra" material?  How does what John says add to or clarifify the story of Jesus as told by the Synoptic writers?

  1. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through him, and without hi was not any thing made." (John 1: 1-3) I think John's purpose in writing this "extra" material is to explain how everything came into being by the word of God. What John says explains the story of Jesus because by saying what he did, he explained that even though Jesus was not here in flesh, it doesn't mean that he wasn't there at creation. Jesus has always been there because he is God.

  2. So what i think is very interesting that i only appears in John. Is the Sarmatian Woman at the well in John 4:4-42 After thinking about it. It sounds like something that could appear in Luke. But Luke has the Samaritan village story already in Luke 9:51-56. But i have also heard before that the woman at the well story is overused. I would disagree with that. But i believe that purpose of this was show love for those. That in society we see as the worse of the worse. John is explaining even though it would've been easier to stay away. 3. In John’s gospel, he includes the story of the wedding at Cana where Jesus turned water into wine. This passage adds to the many miracles that the synoptic gospels tell of Jesus. I think this passage also shows Jesus’ obedience to his mother Mary. Mary didn’t want the new couple to feel embarrassed to have run out of wine. So, she called her son knowing that he would be able to perform the miracle. Even though Jesus said “my hour has not yet come” he performed the miracle anyway.

  4. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him" (John 3:16-17).
This is probably one of the most, if not THE most, well known verse in the Bible. I think it is important to recognize this verse and look into WHY John added it in. This gives a clearer picture of who Jesus is and His purpose on Earth. John says that God sent his son to save the world--he could not have made it any more clear. The entire purpose of Jesus' life on Earth was to save mankind and make known to them the true Savior of the world, and I think this verse clearly states that.

  5. The Wedding at Cana- I think John includes this because this is one of Jesus signs that shows who he really is. Mary asking Jesus to perform the miracle and then telling the servants to do whatever he tells them shows the faith that believers had that God could do whatever they asked if they had faith.- Eathen Erck

  6. I think the biggest story that stuck out to me that wasn't included in the synoptic gospels was the wedding in Cana in Galilee. John spends the majority of the second chapter talking about this wedding. Instantly for me it was something that just wasn't mentioned in the synoptic gospels as at this point after reading most of them I feel that I would be able to recognize what is included mutually in a few of them and what is not included. I think John includes this story I think because it shows Jesus telling these people to just trust him and it shows how they start to trust him and have faith in him which I think is really important.

  7. The Wedding at Cana:
    John 2:1-12
The book of John is like a puzzle, It's helpful for putting pieces in place for other books. Jesus' very first miracle wasn't recorded anywhere else. I think John includes this not only because it was Jesus' very first miracle, but also it establishes him as having miraculous powers early on in his public ministry. It's also a very good way to get a look at Jesus' personality. He listens to his mother when she asks him to do something. Along with being a miracle, it also gives Jesus credibility in his teachings.

  8. John 4:1-45
Jesus and the Woman of Samaria (at the Well).
Growing up Catholic this chapter is very familiar to me and I find it very interesting that it is only in the Gospel of John. It is a very well known passage that in my experience many people (Catholics, christians, and even non-christians) all know. After learning what we have in class regarding Luke - his gospel for the non-jews, and his status as a gentile himself - I am surprised that he does not mention this encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. I believe that the purpose of John adding this story to his gospel was to show that everyone deserves love, even those whom society has outcast. Jesus went out of his way and broke the norm of society by speaking with her. This is also where many people consider Jesus’s public ministry to have officially begun, so for him to start off in this way he is setting a precept for the rest of his ministry and life.
