Welcome!

Welcome to Early Church Keyline Blog 2023--the Official Blog of History 424, Early Church History.

To get started, here's a test of the History 424 blog system. If you don't already have one, you might want to set up a Google/Blogger account. If you use a Google profile, it's easier for me to reply to your posts, something I occasionally do.  You also might want to make yourself a follower to this blog.

If you prefer, you can post as an anonymous blogger.  However, if you choose that option, you need to add your name to the bottom of the post so I know who to give credit to.

When you have created your blogger account and your profile, click the "comments" link below, and answer one (1) of the following questions:

1. Would you rather make comments on a blog, or write a term paper?
2. Which figure or book from the New Testament interests you the most, and why?
3. Why do you think the study of Early Church history is important--or not so important?

After you have done your own blog post, please reply to at least one other student's post.

  1. 1. I would rather make comments on a blog rather than write a term paper. I think it is easy to share thoughts on different topics when they are fresh in the brain compared to waiting until the end of the semester to write a paper.
    2. I think Matthew interests me the most. Matthew interests me the most for the main reason is that is my middle name. Also I just feel I am familiar with the story of Matthew.
    3. I think the study of Early Church is important when you look at how long Christianity has been around. For a religion to have such an impact for such a long period of time means that the beginning should have a key part as to why it has been such a famous religion for such a long time. For me I just think the Early Church and its history has to be important in the story of christianity.

    1. Hey Dawson! I agree that writing our thoughts on a blog is way easier then holding our thoughts in until the end of the semester when we are most likely to not remember everything we were thinking on a specific subject. Also, I like how you brought up how Early Church history is the most important thing in the story of Christianity. It helps to look back at the early Christian church and understand why different version of the Christian faith are what they are and do what they do.

  2. I believe the study of Early Church history is important so we can look back at the many mistakes made by the ancient churches, so we don't make those same mistakes again.

    1. Hey Kristin, I definitely agree with your take on this question. The ancient churches (and some present day churches) have made some pretty disastrous mistakes, so I think it is very important to take a look at and study these mistakes. This idea can also be applied everywhere when studying history. There are countless mistakes that have been made over the years, and by looking at them, we are able to figure out what NOT to do.

  3. I would rather make comments on a blog. That way, you can see others' opinions on the topic as well, giving you the opportunity to change your mind and/or edit your own mindset.

I would also like to quickly comment on question number 3. The study of the Early Church is incredibly important whether you're a Christian or not. Christianity has impacted history in so many ways, and by studying the Early Church, you are gaining knowledge in other areas of history as well. This will allow you to acquire a better understanding of why certain things happened throughout history.

    1. Hey Lauren, I totally agree with you that making blog posts would be better than writing a term paper. Like you said, it’s a great way to see other’s opinions. I always like getting to hear others people’s opinions on a topic or reading, especially if I totally missed something really important from it.

  4. I find that studying the history of the early church is very important. There is definitely some very special aspects to Christianity because if there wasn’t, it would not have survived for as long as it has. By studying the history of the early church, we can see just what it took to create a stable and long-lasting religion. Perhaps by looking at what it took to create this religion, we can in turn use these methods to create a more stable society.

  5. I would rather make comments on a blog since I think it would be easier than trying to write a term paper. You can also see other people's opinions and get a better understanding of where they're coming from, when you're making comments on a blog.

    1. 2. The book of John. Because John gives clear and easy understand as to why he's writing his book and that is to help everyone understand that Jesus is the Son of God. I also think John is one of the easier books to understand in the bible.
      3. I think early church is important because it helps give us a better understanding of where all these different ideas came from.

  6. 1.I would rather make comments on a blog post. I think it would be more interesting to hear different ideas or interpretations from lets say the same verse or verses of a book in the bible. Which i can compare to my view and see in a different way.
    2. My favorite book is Acts also probably one my favorite verses is Acts 5:39 " “but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it—lest you even be found to fight against God. When the Pharisee Gamaliel said that about the early church
    3. I think it is important because you can see the backbone of modern western civilization was founded on that. -Austin Dreyer

    2. Hey, Austin I agree with you on my favorite book of the bible being Acts as well! I believe at least for me the reason is because, Luke is my favorite of the gospels. It is said that Acts was also likely written be Luke. The reason I like Acts is I think it shows clearly how we are called to live and work for God. My personal favorite verses in Acts is Acts 2:17-21!

  7. 3. Why do you think the study of Early Church history is important--or not so important?

I believe that the study of the early church is of vast importance to everyone, believers and non-believers. For believers, the reasoning behind the significance is clear to me. Can you have true faith in something without first knowing your convictions? Many people in today's society say they have faith when they are asked. Their faith is only a part of tradition or coming of age. Fewer people would be proven to be faithful if they were challenged on the beliefs of their faith. However, when you truly learn what Christianity is, what your roots are, and what that means for you as an individual. Then your faith becomes unwavering because you know why you follow what you do. For the non-believers, it is a little trickier to answer why it is essential to study the history of the early church. I can point to two things; however, one is that you wish to understand the roots of humanity. The other is you may come to love something you never knew existed.

Early church history is important to understand as a Christian, as it shows not only the foundations upon which the faith is laid on & should be something we all look back to so we know why & how things were done. Knowing what Jesus & His early followers did would lay a good example to many people in their faith & life. Understanding what Christianity is truly, makes a world of a difference & did so for me personally when absorbing scripture at a low point in my life where I didn't know God & making connections to His Word & how His Spirit was at work in my life, despite all else going on. Having gratitude was an essential for seeing what God had for me, as well as being willing to learn forgiveness. Understanding more about the foundation Jesus laid would be an immense help to many Christians of all kinds throughout the world to see what Jesus taught...
